The Berlin Wall was a world-known symbol of imprisonment and injustice. At a time when many were killed trying to escape into freedom, the Furchert family was granted passports to cross the Berlin Wall for their grandparents 60th wedding anniversary in West Berlin. Michael's father had given East German officials his word as a pastor that they would return...

This unheard of move by the Communist government stunned East German border guards and political officials in free West Berlin alike.

Why would a Christian family, that opposed the Communist regime and refused to join their organizations, be granted an unheard of exception that the Communist government did not even grant to many of their own officials? Who made the decision and why? And would the Furchert's and their five children, after tasting freedom, return behind the Berlin Wall to honor their word, and to stay faithful to their church?

Few events in Michael's life have been such a testament to the power of prayer and God's favor in the midst of adversity. Told by their government that it was impossible and rejected over and over, they petitioned with persistency and faith. On both sides of the Berlin Wall, a separated family prayed fervently, believing that God could make the impossible possible. Despite the law of a dictatorial regime, and the powerful Iron Curtain, God came through and faith triumphed.

Their family devotion book read for the day prior to departure:
"God you have many silent ways in which you make possible what seems impossible to men. Yesterday it was not yet visible, today not much, but tomorrow it will stand before us with all its glory, and we will realize, how you have done what none of our own efforts could have achieved."

For the day of crossing the Berlin Wall, their devotion book read:
"Lord, you have not handed me over to the enemy, but you have set my feet on spacious ground." Psalm 31:8

><> No matter the difficulties we may face, no matter what might stand against us, Michael's testimony inspires us and our families to stand together in faith and prayer and to believe that with God all things are possible.
