Ministry Update

Dear Friends,
The past months have been a whirlwind of events, family visits, wedding celebrations, and ministry tours in the midst of changing colors and Indian Summer. Having had my whole family over from Germany for my sister's wedding at the St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota has been wonderful.
Those who would like to watch the wedding ceremony, which was part of the opening service of the St. Olaf College and included the reknown St. Olaf Choire, can follow this link:

Besides celebrations, travels and family time, my parents also had the opportunity to share their story at churches, schools, universities and on Christian Radio, reliving their memories of life and faith as a pastor's family in East Germany and the Peaceful Revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall.

(September 25th 2009)

My family has returned to Germany with many wonderful memories, while my sister has remained in the USA to stick out her first Minnesota winter as a new US resident...

I just returned from Dallas, Texas, a week ago, where I took in as much warm sun as I could before the upcoming winter season, and meeting with the Joshua Expeditions leadership and tour directors planning a new season of "Igniting Hearts to Change the World".

"...the dictator had just announced that the Berlin Wall would stand for another 100 years. One month later we danced on the Berlin Wall singing the famous German hymn "Now Give All Thanks To God."

Especially during the month of October, I was once again reminded of how much we indeed can change the world. Twenty years ago, the Peaceful Revolution that started within the East German churches would bring down the Berlin Wall, end the Communist regime and change history. I was in the midst of it as a 17 years old teenager.
In October 1989, the dictator and Communist Party chief Erich Honecker had announced that the Berlin Wall would stand for another 100 years. One month later we East Germans danced on the Berlin Wall singing the famous German hymn "Now Give All Thanks To God".
If the minority of Christians in Communist East Germany, by uniting in faith and prayer, could bring down the Berlin Wall, how much can we do as a Christian Church under freedom if we started to make real with our faith? What could we do in America, if we would overcome our fears in rejection, our indifference and complacency, and carry God's light into the streets and places to bring down walls in our communities and nation, and set a fire aflame that can be put out?
As we celebrate 20 years of freedom in Germany and the end of the Cold War Era, some in this country are afraid that their freedoms might be slipping away, are concerned where this country might be headed, politically, culturally or spiritually. But let's take heart, we have a wonderful message to proclaim that can change lives. We can make a difference!

"If the minority of Christians in Communist East Germany, by uniting in faith and prayer, could bring down the Berlin Wall, how much more can we do as a Christian Church under freedom if we started to make real with our faith?"

I enjoyed some memorable moments this past month in encouraging Christians in this country in their lives and faith.  Some of the highlights include:

A speaking series at Temple Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA, to encourage the Christian Church to remember the strength we have to impact lives, transform our society from within, make a difference and change history.
Leading the Spiritual Emphasis Week at Temple Christian School in Madison Heights, VA, to challenge students in daily assemblies to walk the walk and not the fence, to find their true identity in Christ and to stand up for Jesus Christ who stood up for them.
Presenting "Deception & Discernment - How to Stand Firm on Faith in a Spiritually Confused World" at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Abbotsford, WI. Granting a glance into the deception of Nazi Germany and why the Christian Church as a whole failed to take a stand, and drawing startling parallels to modern Western Christianity.
Sharing at the Christian Educators Convention of ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) to encourage teachers and principals in their ministries of impacting a young generation for Christ. Taking a look at the Christian Church in Communist East Germany, that by standing firm on the Gospel and uniting in faith and prayer brought down the Berlin Wall and changed history.

"There are no barriers to faith except those we allow to be there. Communism didn't bring down our faith, our faith brought down the Berlin Wall."

Please continue to uplift this ministry in your prayers as I take this message to churches, schools, colleges and communities in your country. Your prayers, encouragement and donations can help to make a difference!
Sincerely in Christ,
Michael Furchert
