THE CHURCH THAT BROUGHT
DOWN THE BERLIN WALL

 Part II

"While we celebrate 20 years of freedom in Germany and the end of the Cold War Era, some in America are afraid that their freedoms might be slipping away, are concerned where this country might be headed politically, culturally, or spiritually."

...The air was so tense one could cut right through it. My brother-in-law had been drafted into the military which was put on high alert. The tanks were ready to move out and end our demonstrations. My brother-in-law was terrified that he would have to move out as well. It was his relatives and friends on the streets.

Not all who had joined the Peaceful Revolution were Christians. Yet in those weeks of political tension it was the message of the churches that resonated through the streets. We could only overcome with the message of God's peace and the love of Jesus Christ.

Millions of people across the country had now joined the candle vigils and prayer marches, creating a sea of lights across the nation. The movement was growing as Communist East Germany was desperately trying to hold on to its power..

The military started to beat and arrest people and drag them away. They were waiting for someone to react, to pick up a rock, to overturn a car or start a riot. And the government would have had their justification to give the order to open fire...

Instead, one lady kneeling on the street praying, surrounded by military and police, arose and put a flower into the muzzle of a gun. She watched a tear roll down the cheek of the soldier who maybe deep inside his heart had been longing for freedom and liberty himself...

"There are no barriers to faith but those we allow to be there. Communism didn't bring down our faith. Our faith brought down the Berlin Wall."

Not one shot was fired during the Peaceful Revolution. Instead the Berlin Wall came down. The Communist regime collapsed. Months earlier the dictator had announced that the Berlin Wall would stand for another 100 years. Now people were dancing on the Wall and singing the famous German hymn:

"Now Give All Thanks To God."

I was a 17 years old teenager when I stepped over rubble of the Berlin Wall into freedom. The Communist regime was gone. The Berlin Wall had come down. My faith had remained. The Communists had told us that the Christian Church would soon die out. Now they were gone. We were still there, many of us stronger in faith than before.

I realized: there are no barriers to faith but those we allow to be there. Communism didn't bring down our faith. Our faith brought down the Berlin Wall.

The former dictator Erich Honecker now turned to the Christian Church, himself, to find a safe place to stay until his trial would start. He was taken into the home of Pastor Uwe Holmer who witnessed to the former Communist leader the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Another high ranking politician later said about their defeat:

"Our government and military was prepared for everything. But not for candles and hymns, not for faith and prayers..."

"Let's take heart! We have a wonderful message to proclaim that can chance lives. We can make a difference! Let us light a candle and set a fire aflame that cannot be put out. "

If the minority of Christians in East Germany by uniting in faith and prayer, could bring down the Berlin wall and change history, how much more can we do as a Christian Church under freedom if we started to make real with our faith, and proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

While we celebrate 20 years of freedom in Germany and the end of the Cold War Era, some in America are afraid that their freedoms might be slipping away, are concerned where this country might be headed politically, culturally, or spiritually.

But let's take heart! We have a wonderful message to proclaim that can change lives. We can make a difference!  Let us remember the strength we have as the Church of Jesus Christ to transform our society, starting with our own hearts and lives, reaching our neighbors, our families, our schools and communities, our city, our state and our nation.

Let us carry God's light into the streets and places to impact lives, change our world and to make a difference.

Let us light a candle and set a fire aflame that cannot be put out.

Sincerely in Christ,

Michael Furchert

"It is strong in my spirit that Michael has been sent to America at such a time. His powerful messages open our eyes and give us strength in times of uncertainty. Michael is the 3rd generation of evangelists who have shared God's hope from the Nazi regime of Hitler Germany, throughout WWII and Communism. His challenge to stand firm on faith regardless of circumstances shines a light of hope and direction in times as these.

Michael has spoken in many churches, schools and conventions, on radio and TV programs. Please consider sharing this message with your churches, organizations and communities. His messages must be heard around this nation."

In this powerful message Michael takes us into the heart of the Peaceful Revolution that started within the East German churches and brought down the Berlin Wall. He challenges Christians in America to remember the strength we have to impact lives, bring down walls, make a difference and change history.
